The organizers, China’s automobile manufacturers’ association, said the show’s theme will be “Innovation for a Better Life.” The event will focus on the growth of the Chinese car industry, innovation and green technology.
With European sales continuing to decline and the long-term outlook for other mature markets uncertain, carmakers have high hopes for China. Most brands reported increases in Chinese car sales last year, while their performance elsewhere was lackluster. The US was a notable, positive exception, posting 2012 sales growth of 13 pc to 14.5 million units.
In China, car sales jumped 6.8 pc to a record 14.7 million units last year.
Rao Da, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association, told the China Daily newspaper that sales growth would likely be strong in 2013 as well. “Providing there are no more government curbs, the passenger vehicle market could grow 10 percent in 2013,” he said.
The Chinese government has taken measures to drive down car sales in major cities to counteract growing pollution. If additional measures are implemented, that will further depress sales, Rao said. “If so, annual growth will be 5 percent.”
Shanghai Auto will take place in the Shanghai New International Expo Center. The exhibition is expected to occupy all 17 indoor halls, up from 13 in 2011, as well as outdoor temporary exhibition halls. Total floor space allocated to the auto industry will be about 280,000 square meters.
The show will kick off with a press day on April 20, when international and domestic automakers will display new models and technologies and hold press conferences. April 21 and 22 will be industry days and the following seven days will be for the general public.
The auto show will feature exhibits from most international and Chinese car brands.
