Groupe PSA has started a connected-car demonstration programme in Wuxi, China, to showcase the application of wireless LTE-V2X vehicle-to-infrastructure communications on a city level. The project involves over 100,000 commercial users; 13 typical scenarios; over 600 communication base stations; and 226 road intersections; and covers an area of 170 sq km.
The demonstration is supported by the Jinangsu Provincial Government, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Public Safety. It will be implemented in three phases to 2020 and visitors to the city will be invited to test and experience the technology.
Vehicles used in the demo are the DS 7 Crossback, Peugeot 4008 and Citroen C5 Aircross SUVs. The DS cars are equipped with a Huawei C-V2X solution, and the Peugeot and Citroen cars with the Qualcomm 9150 C-V2X chipset. They will communicate with roadside infrastructure; receive real-time traffic information from traffic signals; and from other vehicles and pedestrians, with whom the car can communicate directly – warnings will be issued to the driver if emergency braking is required, for example. The data will also advise on speed optimization to better-navigate intersections (and thus smooth out traffic flow) and on hazards or incidents ahead on a route.
