Delphi will give a preview at the Frankfurt auto show (IAA) of an integrated radar and camera system designed to boost active safety in cars.

The US-based automotive supplier said its RacAM module enables a suite of active safety systems that includes adaptive cruise control, headlamp control, traffic sign recognition, collision warning and adaptive braking. The system is expected to be on the road in 2014.

Delphi Europe President Michael Gassen said in a press release that active safety systems are needed to complement passive systems. "We must work collectively to reduce the severity of crashes, or eliminate them altogether," he said.

The Radar-cum-camera module allows for a high-quality analysis of a road scene. And because the radar is removed from a vehicle's crush zone, it makes the whole system more robust, Delphi said.

The module, which can be mounted on the windscreen side of the rear view mirror, also reduces the expense of multiple safety systems, Delphi said.
