Daimler said its car2go car-sharing scheme has achieved a first milestone: 1 million car rentals.

The program has been running for two-and-a-half years, gradually expanding globally from its first location in Ulm.

In that southern Germany city car2go now has 21,000 registered users sharing 300 smart fortwo models.

Presently car2go operates in a range of major cities, including Hamburg, Vancouver and Amsterdam, where the program operates with 300 electric fortwo models.

Daimler said it is also rolling out car2go with battery-electric vehicles in San Diego. Early next year, car2go will come to Lyon and the program will be introduced to Stuttgart, Daimler's home city, in the second half of the year.

Said car2go managing director Robert Henrich: "From the start we wanted to not just be of use to our customers, but also inspire them. Our numbers show that we're succeeding."
