Michael Jost, head of strategy, Volkswagen
Volkswagen has announced that it will release what it says will be its final diesel and petrol platforms in 2026, paving the way for an all-EV future, according to Bloomberg.
The announcement came at an industry conference held near the company’s global headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany.
“Our colleagues are working on the last platform for vehicles that aren’t CO2 neutral,” said Michael Jost, head of strategy at Volkswagen, “We’re gradually fading out combustion engines to the absolute minimum.”
The 2026 date does not mean the end of ICE development entirely, however. According to the report, Volkswagen will continue to modify its combustion engine technology after the new platform is introduced.
Even as far ahead as 2050, there may still be ICE powered Volkswagen vehicles in regions without sufficient charging infrastructure, said Jost.
