Fabian, who is 44, also becomes head of the governance, risk and compliance department. He will report directly to VW group CEO Martin Winterkorn.
“Volkswagen’s good name is our most valuable asset,” Winterkorn said in a statement. “There can be no compromises as far as complying with our code of conduct is concerned.”
Winterkorn also noted that VW is adopting an innovative approach by combining the different areas into one department.
Fabian is a labor law specialist, who joined VW as head of its labor law department in 2001 after working for different law firms earlier. While at VW, Fabian worked closely on compliance with corporate governance standards and was jointly responsible for setting up the compliance department.
VW said that, through the creation of an independent management function, it is giving even greater weight to compliance.
