Audi confirmed Wednesday that it will start selling a hybrid version of its flagship A8 sedan in 2012.

The German premium car maker said the A8 hybrid will have a 2.0 TSFI gasoline engine coupled with an electric motor, providing a combined 245 bhp and average fuel consumption of less than 6.4 liters per 100 km.

The model will be able to drive around 3km on electric power alone. It has an electric top speed of about 100 km/h.

The hybrid sedan will have five operating states: TFSI engine alone; electric drive only; and three hybrid modes. Two displays show the driver all operating modes in detail.

The A8 hybrid will have a 36.7 kilo lithium-ion battery located in a crash-proof area in the trunk. It provides 40 KW of power.

Audi said its lightweight construction will make the A8 hybrid one of the lightest sedans in its category. The A8 hybrid will have the same Audi Space Frame all-aluminum body as the other A8 variants.
