BMW has extended its “Connected Drive” pact with Deutsche Telekom for another three years. The German telecommunications group will continue tobe responsible for the infrastructure of BMW’s mobile communications platform. It will be in charge of Assist, Online, Tracking, TeleServices and Driver assistance in all European countries.
Telekom has developed a dedicated payment model for the cooperation. It guarantees full mobile coverage through its “Edge” data network.
BMW offers Connected Drive as an option in its core model range from the 1 series through the 7 series, as well as in its Z and X sports models. If a buyer takes the BMW Professional infotainment system, the service is free of charge for 36 months.
Connected Drive is an embedded solution that uses the new MFF Sim chip technology.
BMW and Deutsche Telekom have cooperated since 2004, but the communications company also discussed cooperations with other carmakers. Said Michael J. Scholz, responsible for Telekom’s automotive businessunit in the business-customer division: “Of course, we are also talking with other manufacturers, but BMW is currently the leader in innovation in this area.”
