LAS VEGAS ”“ Harman and Sierra Wireless said they will cooperate to bring faster access to data into the car.
Harman a US-based audio and infotainment group, will support Sierra Wireless AirPrime intelligent embedded modules for next-generation G4 or LTE mobile networks. Sierra Wireless specializes in mobile computing and machine-to-machine communications products.
The companies said during the Consumer Entertainment Show (CES) that their combined offering will allow wireless data access at download speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds up to 50 Mbps on LTE networks.
Those speeds make it possible to provide new types of information to people in cars, including real-time mapping and traffic updates, dynamic loaded applications and content, gaming, streaming video, and full internet access that can be shared among multiple devices.
“We are excited about the potential for 4G/LTE in the connected car,” said Philippe Guillemette, Chief Technology Officer for Sierra Wireless. He said the technology will help increase safety and convenience for passengers and drivers,
According to Strategy Analytics, 70pc of all vehicles produced in 2009 already had some form of connectivity on board. That percentage is expected to increase to 95% by 2012, the automotive researchers say.
