General Motors will build an all-electric version of the Chevrolet Spark minicar for launch in 2013.
The US carmaker confirmed earlier news reports that it would be building a full electric model in addition to the Chevrolet Volt, which has an electric motor coupled with a range-extending gasoline engine.
“The Spark EV offers customers living in urban areas who have predictable driving patterns or short commutes an all-electric option,” said Jim Federico, Chevrolet's global vehicle chief engineer for electric vehicles.
GM said the Spark would be developed using insights gained from electric demonstration vehicles Chevrolet has been testing in several parts of the world.
The Spark will be powered by nanophosphate lithium-ion battery packs provided by A123 Systems.
