Continental has developed an upgradable infotainment system for Fiat that will debut on the new Fiat 500L this month.
The German automotive supplier said the system will be available in various configurations from a simple radio to an advanced multimedia system. After the 500L, it will be rolled out in other Fiat and Chrysler models.
The head unit will provide access to analogue and digital radio or navigation functions on a 5 inch touch screen, Continental said. It will also provide USB connectivity for digital music and a bluetooth interface for hands-free use of smartphones.
The system is based on the Windows Embedded Automotive operationg system and features text-to-speech as well as voice recognition.
The new head unit will allow the installation of new software functions even after the start of series production. "Thus the system can be adjusted to the changing preferences of the driver over the vehicle’s complete life-cycle," Continental said.
