Daimler won two first-place “mobile excellence awards” for an iPhone app it developed for its smart model.

The German premium car maker won the awards for best user interface and best in mobile music, at the awards, which were conveyed in Los Angeles earlier this week.

The Mobile Excellence Awards honor the best products in mobile entertainment, technology, marketing and media. The jury evaluates the submitted innovations using five criteria: strategic initiative, impact of technology used, creativity, ease of use and reach and execution and market success.

Daimler developed a special iPhone drive app for the smart, which, together with a smart kit and iPhone cradle, becomes a multimedia trip computer that is optimized and specially designed for the smart fortwo model.

The smart drive app lets a driver make hands-free phone calls, access a music collection, listen to internet radio and use a navigation system. A car finder helps locate a parked smart car.

The new smart drive app for the iPhone is simple to operate and features extra large buttons. Its design aims to make “urban mobility even easier and more fun,” which is the objective of the smart philosophy, Daimlersaid in a press release.

Daimlersaid the smart drive app is the first drive app on the market developed by a car brand. “It combines all the features needed on theroad in a single app,” the company said.

The smart cradle for the iPhone will cost €240 in Germany. The smart drive app for the iPhone can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store at a one-off price of €9.99 for the basic version. A navigation upgrade with up-to-date maps costs €49.99 a year.
