Delphi is taking minority interests in two Israeli companies, as it moves to strengthen its connected-car related products and services.

The US-based automotive supplier said it had signed a commercial partnership agreement with otonomo, a specialist in monetizing automotive data by way of a digital marketplace. The tie-up will broaden the range of systems and services Delphi can offer to the industry.

Delphi also announced that it had made a strategic investment in Valens, an Israel-based specialist in signal processing. This technology is considered a key enabler for connected cars.

Delphi CEO Kevin Clark said the otonomo investment will allow it to integrate the Israeli company's connected car marketplace into  Delphi products, which will allow Delphi to offer "a complete data acquisition and monetization solution for automakers.”

Delphi said otonomo complements data management capabilities it already has. It plans to offer what it calls a "connected car ecosystem," which will help automotive companies make money with car and customer data.

Said Clark: "The focus of our partnership will be bringing otonomo’s connected car marketplace to OEM customers,”

In an interview with automotiveIT earlier this year, otonomo founder and CEO Ben Volkow said the auto industry has been slow to capitalize on the business potential of automotive data. “There’s a lot of value in this data, which you can sell and monetize. Until today, connectivity has been a disaster, financially,” he said. “We can help a carmaker turn it into a new business by enabling new services.”

With regard to Valens, Delphi's Clark said that company's technology will also help strengthen its position in connected-car offerings.

“Demand for increased connectivity, active safety and greater vehicle automation requires best-in-class signal and power distribution capabilities along with a robust data management strategy," Clark said.

Valens has developed HDBaseT, the global standard for transmission of ultra-high definition video, audio, ethernet and controls data. The technology addresses the need for more bandwidth and wiring that results from the arrival of more powerful connected infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems.
