Ford Motor is adding two new electrically powered models to its Chinese product lineup, as the US carmaker accelerates plans to bring more EVs to the world’s biggest car market.

In 2018, Ford will launch the Mondeo Energi plug-in hybrid in China. It will be the first car of its kind the carmaker will build in China at its Changan Ford joint venture.

Ford also plans to bring a fully electric small SUV to China in the next five years. The vehicle will have a range of 450 km.

Both cars are part of Ford’s ambitious strategy to sell electric versions of 70 pc of its cars in China by 2025.

“We are prioritizing our electrification efforts on China to reflect its importance as a global electrified vehicle market,” Ford CEO Mark Fields said in a statement.

With urban air pollution increasing in China, the country is accelerating its strategy to introduce more EVs to the market.It is offering a wide range of incentives and analysts say customers are responding positively.

China already is the world’s biggest market for EVs and, according to the Society of Automotive Engineers of China, so-called “new energy vehicles” are expected to account for more than 15 pc of total passenger vehicle sales in the country by 2025.

Ford plans to offer hybrids, plug-in hybrids and full battery-electric powertrain options in China in coming years. The carmaker will start building some of these electric powertrains locally starting in 2020.
