Ford of Europe has recruited Bearing Point consultant Sarah-Jayne Williams to take charge of the carmaker's efforts in Europe to broaden its business into mobility services and other new ventures.

Williams will report jointly to Ford of Europe CEO Steven Armstrong and to John Larsen, the company's global head of operations and smart mobility. She will start in her new role in September.

Armstrong said Williams' role will be "to tackle urban transportation challenges and opportunities, and respond to the growth of the sharing economy by defining and implementing Ford of Europe’s Smart Mobility strategy."

He added that Williams will be tasked with accelerating the Europe-wide rollout of mobility services. Like most carmakers, Ford is keen to develop business areas that go far beyond the manufacturing and selling of cars.

Williams is a partner in the automotive team of Bearing Point. She has led the consultants' Connected Car Center of Excellence and has worked with a range of automotive companies on new business models, digital strategies and connected services.

Williams will be based in London, where she will work out of Ford Motor's Smart Mobility Innovation Office.
