Continental will unveil a specially designed tire aimed at helping electric vehicles expand their driving range.
At the upcoming Frankfurt auto show (IAA), the German automotive supplier and tire maker wants to address some of the major issues facing the auto industry. Among these is the limited distance EVs can cover on battery power, which is a major concern for potential car buyers and automakers alike.
Continental said it will show a protoype "Conti.eContact" tire that has been specially designed for electrically powered cars. Rolling resistance has been reduced by 20 pc without compromising safety features.
"Thanks to its special, innovative size and design, this tire exhibits much lower rolling resistance than conventional tires," Continental said in a press release. Driving distances of electric cars "can be lengthened considerably," the company added. And that should help ensure the acceptance of EVs outside urban centers, it said.
The Hannover-based automotive supplier will have a 900 square-meter booth at the IAA. Under the motto "Driving Future Mobility," Continental will show driverassistance and brake systems, vehicle access, networking and operating concepts, drive technologies, sensors and interior materials.
