Kuka said it had received a major order to build a car body assembly line for a German premium carmaker in China.

The German robotics and plant engineering group said its Chinese subsidiary had booked the order, which it said is valued "in the mid-double-digit million euro range."

Kuka will develop and build a car body assembly line and parts that include the roof and tailgate of the model that will be built in the plant. It didn't identify the carmaker.

The assembly line will feature 136 Kuka robots, which will handle spot welding, inline measurement and other tasks.

Kuka said the assembly line will be highly automated, using the company's flexible laser welding system.

"The advantages of this method are the improved stiffness, lower energy input and a reduced use of material," said Frank Klingemann, CEO of Kuka Systems.
