Mazda Motor will start leasing its Demio EV model to local authorities and corporate customers in Japan starting in October.

The Japanese carmaker said the electric vehicle, which is a derivative of its combustion-engine-powered Demio model, has an electric driving range of 200km. The EV has the same cabin space and cargo capacity as the standard Demio.

Mazda said it will lease about 100 units to local governments and companies, mostly in western Japan.

The Demio's lithium-ion batteries are fully recharged in eight hours, but, using a fast charger, the batteries can be at 80 pc capacity in 40 minutes.
