Volkswagen will show a so-called “one liter car” at the Qatar auto show later this month, according to German newsweekly Wirtschaftswoche.

In a news release, Wirtschaftswoche said VW will show the prototype of a model with extremely low fuel consumption that will go into production in 2013.

The two-seater car will have a carbon-fiber frame and hybrid propulsion. It will feature a two-cylinder diesel engine supported by an electric motor.

VW showed a concept car, the L1, in 2009 that had a similar powertrain and could travel 100km on 1 liter of diesel fuel. Earlier in the decade the German automaker also revealed a concept car with a 1-liter engine that had a carbon-fiber shell.

The 1 liter car is a pet project of VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech.

The Qatar auto show will take place January 26 through January 29. Qatar is a large VW group shareholder.
