A European-Union sponsored project will provide travelers with a new set of smartphone apps to make traveling within the 27-nation bloc easier.
The Mobinet service platform will offer online access to new types of mobile services such as real-time multimodal travel assistance, parking guidance and Europe-wide ticketing for transit services.
The platform's features will include and online B2B directory of transport data and services; an open business environment that allows the integration of third-party services; a dedicated app store and a seucre environment for in-vehicle and portable devices; a B2B e-marketplace; and a service development kit.
"Our ambition is to establish Mobinet as THE connected mobility and transport service platform for all of Europe's travellers and transport service suppliers," said Paul Kompfner, the European head of SmartMobility at ERTICO, a partnership of stakeholders in Europe's efforts to create an intelligent transport system.
Mobinet will be organized as a public-private partnership that will live on after the initial project term ends on June 30, 2016.
The project coordinators hope to deliver a fully operational first-generation system in early 2014. It will be tested at eight pilot sites across Europe.
