Shanghai OnStar Telematics Co., Ltd., opened a second call center in China, citing increased demand in the world's fastest growing major car market.

The telematics unit of General Motors said the new call center in Xiamen has 200 advisers. It can expand to add 750 more staff as demand increases.

Shanghai OnStar, a joint venture between GM, SAIC and Shanghai GM, was established in 2009. It currently has nearly 370,000 customers in China.

Xiamen is the sixth of OnStar’s global call centers with others located in Warren, Mich., Charlotte, N.C., Oshawa, Ontario, Makati, Philippines, and Shanghai.

Each month, the call centers serve more than 6 million customers and respond to more than 4 million OnStar calls. Those calls cover 45 services OnStar proides.

OnStar advisers at the Xiamen call center speak a variety of Chinese dialects allowing them to cater to distinct regions.

OnStar, which is available in North America and China, has 6 million customers worldwide. GM recently introduced an aftermarket option for owners of non-GM models.
