General Motors, which is keen to broaden the geographical reach of its OnStar safety and emergency calling system, will make the technology available in Mexico from 2013.
OnStar is already marketed in the US, Canada and China.
"We will continue to grow GM’s connected vehicle solutions in other regions of the world in the coming months and years,” said Mary Chan, president of GM's Global Connected Consumer strategy.
Some industry insiders have speculated that OnStar will come to Europe possibly as early as 2015, when the 27-nation European Union is expected to introduce a mandatory emergency-calling system for all new cars.
A senior PSA/Peugeot-Citroen official toldÂ automotiveIT recently that a European adoption of OnStar is part of broader collaboration talks between the French automaker and GM.
"Of course it’s part of the discussion,” said Marc Duval Destin, PSA’s vice president, automotive research and advanced engineering.
GM executives have cautioned, however, that the technical adaptation of the OnStar system to European GSM-based phone systems is a complex undertaking.
The Mexican version of OnStar will offer automatic crash response, 24-by-7 emergency service, stolen vehicle assistance and remote vehicle diagnostics. In addition, the service will provide connectivity to the car through OnStar's RemoteLink Mobile Application, and it will feature turn-by-turn navigation and the option to unlock car doors remotely.
GM said the expansion into Mexico aims to increase the brand's position in the market there.Â "This affirms our commitment to continued technological innovation, outstanding customer experiences and our focus on strengthening our competitiveness in the Mexican market,"Â Ernesto M. Hernandez, president and managing director of General Motors de Mexico, said in a press release.
OnStar has more than 6 million subscribers and is available on more than 40 GM models. The carmaker also offers an aftermarket mirror solution that can be adopted in non-GM vehicles as well.
