HANOVER -- Opel sees General Motors' OnStar connectivity service as a key part of its strategy to offer more mobility products, even after the planned takeover of the German brand by France's PSA Group.

"If the deal happens, OnStar will continue to be available and it would even make sense in other vehicles," Opel's director brand strategy and marketing communications, Tobias Gubitz, said. "We and GM agree that OnStar is a very good offering that will continue to be there."

It was unclear whether OnStar might, in future, also be available to PSA's Peugeot and Citroen brands.

PSA agreed with GM last month to acquire the German subsidiary of the US automotive group. The transaction is expected to close by year-end.

Gubitz, who spoke at the automotiveIT Congress here, said Opel is on its way from being a maker of vehicles to becoming a full-scale mobility provider. Key trends in this development are connectivity and electric mobility.

As part of the strategy, Opel will be offering a range of new products, including many electrically powered cars such as the new Ampera-E. At the same time, Gubitz said, Opel is working on many new business models. Many of these revolve around safety and comfort functions available through OnStar.

The automotiveIT Congress, which is held every year during the CeBIT technology fair here, provides a forum to discuss the digital technologies that help reshape the global auto industry.

This year’s conference, which has 600 registered participants, featured presentations by, among others, Volkswagen Group CIO Martin Hofmann, Bosch CIO Elmar Pritsch and Brigitte Courtehoux, head of mobility services at France’s PSA Group.
