German automotive suppliers are using the growing demand for renewable energy solutions as a means to reduce their dependence on the car industry.

That is one of the conclusions from research conducted by Germany's puls market researchers.

According to the study, automotive suppliers depended for 74 percent of their revenue on the car industry in 2010, but will only have 63 pc of sales in the automotive sector this year.

The study was conducted among 200 German suppliers.

The researchers found that suppliers saw lightweight construction as the key technology for the automobile of the future. That marked a change from last year, when they said electric propulsion was the key technology.

Puls CEO Konrad Wessner said lightweight construction is deemed so important because it gives suppliers products to help lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions regardless of the kind of engine used in a vehicle.

Said Wessner:"Apparently the electric-vehicle hype is cooling down a bit."
