Mahindra has selected ZF Friedrichshafen as the ’official powertrain partner’ for its Formula E race car. The two companies have already started to develop an electric driveline for the 2021-2021 season of the electric-vehicle racing competition.
In addition to the electric motor, ZF is developing a single-gear transmission and power electronics that are specifically designed for motor sports.
The German automotive supplier group is already supporting Mahindra Racing with chassis development and other expertise for the upcoming sixth Formula E racing season, which starts next month.
For ZF, Formula E is important because it allows the company to showcase technologies that will be key to tomorrow’s electric mobility. “In no other racing series is the transfer of expertise from motorsports to volume production development as great as in Formula E,” ZF CEO Wolf-Henning Scheider said in a press release.
ZF previously provided an electric driveline to the Venturi Formula E team, a relationship that is now ending. Venturi, which is based in Monaco, will race in Formula E this year as a customer team of the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E team.
ZF’s drivetrain was also used by the German HWA Racelab team, a customer team of Venturi.
Dilbagh Gill, CEO and team principal of Mahindra Racing, cited ZF’s electric powertrain expertise as he welcomed the new partnership with the German supplier group.
“We now have one of the most successful global players in the field of e-mobility at our side,” he said in a press release. “We were highly impressed by the performance of the ZF driveline in the most recent Formula E season.”
The Formula E racing championship, which opened in 2014, is the premier race for electric vehicles. Like Formula One, the race provides an opportunity for participating automotive companies to test and show technologies that could be transferred to regular production vehicles at a later date.
