TomTom has launched a development platform that lets programmers and integrators build customized business applications for the company's navigation and location products.

The platform, which is called TomTom Bridge, "opens up a world of possibilities for every business that runs a fleet of vehicles,"  Corinne Vigreux, a TomTom managing director, said in a press statement.

The Netherlands-based mapping and location services specialist said  two companies have already made use of the platform: AppCarousel has built a customizable app store for companies. And Page Up, a French company specializing in field mobility for professional workers, has launched a series of mobile solutions with Near Field Communication and bar code scanner, digital signature app and connection to a Bluetooth printer.

TomTom said on its Web site that developers can use standard Android developer tools to build applications.
