Toyota and Japan's NTT Group are cooperating to develop connected-car technologies, combining research in accident prevention, new mobility services and other areas.

The two companies said in a press release that their goal is to realize "a sustainable smart mobility society" and, to achieve this, they want to develop, verify and standardize connected-car technology.

Toyota, the world's number two carmaker after Volkswagen, and NTT, one of the largest telecommunications groups, cited four concrete areas of cooperation:

  1. Collection and accumulation of vehicle data
  2. Internet-of-things networks and data centers
  3. Next-generation communication technologies, including 5G
  4. Use of artificial intelligence in driver assistance
