TRW is opening a technical center in China that will be its largest worldwide.

The US automotive supplier group said the 66,000 square meter facility, which is located in Anting, near Shanghai, will have more than 20 scientific testing labs. Focus areas include braking, steering and suspension, occupant safety and safety electronics.

The facility will employ more than 1,200 people.

TRW CEO John Plant said the tech center will help TRW deliver advanced safety systems to automakers for the Chinese market and for other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

"With the number of cars on the road in China expected to double by 2020, the issues of improved vehicle safety and education, for both drivers and other road users, have to be a priority for the industry," Plant said in a press statement.
