Volkswagen Group is teaming up with China’s Mobvoi to develop and implement artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the car.

The German automotive group said the two companies will form a 50-50 joint venture to develop technologies for smart mobility.

Mobvoi is a Chinese specialist in voice recognition, natural language processing and other technologies that are set to benefit from AI.

“We are impressed by Mobvoi’s innovative approach of AI technology, and we are pleased to form this joint venture to explore the next generation of smart mobility,” Volkswagen Group China CEO Jochem Heizmann said in a statement.

For Mobvoi, the cooperation with the world’s largest car group, offers an opportunity to speed up, deepen and expand its R&D in the area of new automotive technologies.

Said Mobvoi CEO Zhifei Li: “Mobvoi’s mission has always been redefining the next generation human-machine interaction and this joint venture will provide us a new platform to do so.”

The joint venture will develop products for VW Group models as well as other brands.
