Volkswagen Group will use the OpenStack software platform for its next-generation private cloud, Mirantis, the open-source specialist that will roll out the technology, said in a press statement.

OpenStack is an open-source cloud-based software platform that is most often made available as an infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS).

Mirantis said the deployment of the OpenStack platform, which will run internal as well as consumer-facing applications for all VW Group brands, will help the carmaker cut IT costs through standardization.

VW said OpenStack will also let its developers build and deliver software faster.

Mirantis said it was awarded the contract following a selection process in which it demonstrated "a 98 pc execution rate across 64 use cases."

Mirantis is a California-based company venture-backed by a range of investors including August Capital, Dell Ventures, Ericsson, Goldman Sachs and Intel.
