Volkswagen has recruited Apple executive Johann Jungwirth to head its digitization efforts. He most recently headed Apple's Mac systems engineering operations in California and started in his new position at VW November 1.

Jungwirth, 42, is in charge of a newly established "Digitalization Strategy" department at the German carmaker. He reports directly to VW CEO Matthias Mueller.

The new Volkswagen executive already worked in the car industry earlier in his career. In 2009 he was appointed president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America. In that position, Jungwirth was in charge of all R&D in the US market.

Between 2008 and 2014, he also was vice president infotainment and telematics.

Jungwirth holds an electrical engineering degree from Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University in Stuttgart.
