HANOVER -- Robert Bosch CIO Elmar Pritsch on Thursday said digital change provides corporate IT departments with an opportunity to assume a different role.

"IT is growing out of the role of driver of efficiency and is becoming a function that adds value and is becoming part of the product," Pritsch told the automotiveIT Congress here.

Pritsch said the world's largest automotive supplier is hard at work to make all the products it builds connected by 2020. It also wants to establish its own services marketplace for industry 4.0 and smart home technologies by 2020.

Bosch also wants to offer new, connected internet-of-things services. "We build four to five million sensors every day," Pritsch noted.

The CIO cited innovative new formats such as hackathons, innovation hubs and cooperations with startup companies as key to speeding up development at Bosch.

He noted that young talent is particularly important and that there is strong competition for qualified staff. The German supplier has 1,000 open positions in the IT department alone.

The automotiveIT Congress takes place every year during the CeBIT technology fair.
