inthinc Technology Solutions has been awarded a patent covering driving safety technology related to cell phone and text detection.

The US-based telematics company said the patent will help it make products that combat distracted driving. The patent covers technology that detects in-car cell phone usage. The system then coaches the driver to refrain from using a cell phone while driving.

“Our goal is to reduce risky driving behavior by developing technologies that change driver behavior,” inthinc CEO Todd Follmer said in a statement.

Salt Lake City based inthinc will introduce distracted-driving prevention features in its new product offering later this year. These features will include active warnings to drivers or the provision of in-vehicle cell-phone use data to commercial fleet managers.

inthinc, which  specializes in telematics, fleet management solutions and driving safety, was also awarded a patent covering technology that is used for identifyingvehicles that exceed the posted speed limit.
