A University of Ottawa-led research network has been awarded a 5 million Canadian dlr grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
An additional 3 million dlrs was awarded by industry partners towards a large-scale research program the university predicts will transform the way Canadians drive.
The project, which includes several other universities, government organizations and private-sector companies,is conducting research to develop the next generation of intelligent vehicle networks and applications. These will allow high-speed communication among vehicles and ground-based infrastructure, and increase driving comfort, the university said.
The university said in a press release: "These leading-edge technologies will significantly improve efficiency, safety, productivity and general mobility on the road, while reducing threats to travel safety and security, as well as greenhouse gas emissions."
